In a bid to alleviate the mounting financial burden on domestic power consumers, Tripura has called upon the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to explore effective strategies for reducing escalating power costs and minimizing central costs.

This plea was made by the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) during the recently concluded 87th Forum of Regulators meet, hosted for the first time by Tripura.

During the event, which commenced on August 24 and will be concluded on Sunday (Aug 27), representatives from both state and central electricity regulatory bodies convened to deliberate upon pertinent issues within the sector.

Chairman of TERC, D Radhakrishna, shed light on the key points discussed during the meeting.

Given Tripura’s predominant reliance on domestic power consumption, characterized by lower consumption levels, Chairman Radhakrishna highlighted the adverse impact of burgeoning central costs and increasing power tariffs on local consumers.

“In light of such a situation, it is imperative that we identify avenues to curtail the escalating power expenses, with active involvement from CERC to mitigate the central costs,” emphasized Radhakrishna.

Established under the framework of the Electricity Act, 2003, the Electricity Regulatory Authorities function as quasi-judicial bodies responsible for overseeing the electricity sector’s operations. The Forum of Regulators convenes on a quarterly basis to foster discussions on regulatory measures, aiming to streamline operational functions.

Beyond the discourse on power costs, participants engaged in comprehensive dialogues to enhance the power sector’s performance and align with central policies governing the domain.

The 87th Forum of Regulators meeting in Agartala saw the participation of Chairpersons representing various state regulatory bodies, primarily comprising esteemed members such as Senior High Court Judges and Senior IAS officers. The event not only facilitated knowledge exchange but also reinforced the collaborative approach required to meet the challenges faced by the power sector.
