Tripura Weather Update: Normal life hit as rains continue pouring under the influence of the low-pressure in Bay of Bengal. Agartala faces waterlogging, while Sabroom battles stormy winds

Agartala (Tripura), May 29: A powerful low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has unleashed heavy rainfall and gusty winds across Tripura, severely disrupting daily life on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for West Tripura and Khowai districts, forecasting intense showers of 7 to over 20 cm, including isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall, until May 30. An orange alert remains in effect for the rest of the state, signaling heavy rainfall and potential disruptions.

The depression on the Bay of Bengal has made a landfall in Satkhira and adjacent areas, Bdnews24 reported today.

Agartala Grapples with Waterlogging and Disruptions

In Agartala, relentless rain that began on Wednesday continued to pour, causing significant waterlogging in several areas under the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

Dark clouds loomed over the city skyline, accompanied by non-stop downpours that led to sparse crowds in main markets and a noticeable reduction in rickshaws and autos at the busy Motor Stand.

By evening, overflowing drains inundated multiple neighborhoods, though authorities swiftly deployed water-flushing pumps to clear most affected areas.

According to Akashvani, Agartala recorded 14.4 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm. The city’s maximum temperature today was 27°C, with a minimum of 25.6°C.

For Friday (May 30), the IMD predicts a high of 29°C and a low of 23°C, with heavy rainfall expected to persist.

Sabroom Faces Stormy Winds and Fallen Trees

In South Tripura’s Sabroom sub-division, heavy rain and stormy winds on Thursday evening caused trees to fall in several areas. The sub-divisional administration’s disaster management team responded promptly to mitigate risks.

To address waterlogging and traffic congestion, the department worked tirelessly to repair roads across the municipal council, drawing on lessons from last year’s monsoon challenges.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shib Jyoti Datta has instructed the disaster management team to maintain heightened alertness for the next three days.

Minimal Impact on Boro Paddy Crop

Despite the heavy rainfall, agricultural officer Manohar Das from Satchand reported that the Boro paddy crop is unlikely to face significant damage.

Approximately 90% of the crop has already been harvested, with only 10% remaining in the fields. Unless excessive rainfall occurs, the remaining crops are expected to remain unaffected.

IMD’s Forecast and Statewide Alerts

The IMD’s forecast for May 30 indicates continued heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) across West Tripura, Khowai, Dhalai, Unakoti, and North districts, prompting an orange alert.

The cyclonic circulation, extending 7.6 km above sea level in the northwest Bay of Bengal, is moving northward, potentially intensifying the rainfall in the coming days.

Proactive Measures by Authorities

The Sabroom administration has implemented proactive measures to combat the cyclone’s impact, including road repairs and heightened disaster preparedness. These efforts aim to minimize disruptions caused by waterlogging and ensure public safety.

Stay Informed and Safe

Residents are urged to stay updated with IMD alerts and exercise caution amid the ongoing heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
