Agartala (Tripura), July 29: The Tripura government has initiated swift action after the tragic suicide of a promising student, allegedly triggered by humiliation at school.

Acting on the directive of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, the Directorate of Secondary Education has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the death of Trisha Majumder, a Class XII student of Sonarpur Higher Secondary School in Belonia, South Tripura.

The inquiry panel includes Lisa Bardhan, Joint Director of Elementary Education; Kajal Kumar Bhowmik, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Directorate of Secondary Education; and Sudip Sarkar, OSD from the District Education Officer’s office in West Tripura.

Prima facie report indicates that Trisha may have taken the drastic step after being allegedly scolded by a teacher. The committee has been tasked with thoroughly examining all circumstances surrounding the incident and is expected to submit its report by Wednesday (July 30).

Trisha Majumder, the daughter of Samar Majumder, a daily wage earner, was an academically gifted student who consistently topped her class at Barpathari Sonarpur School under the Belonia subdivision. Her death has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about the emotional well-being of students.

According to her family, the ordeal began during a recent Biology test where Trisha was awarded 13 out of 14 marks. They allege that teacher Bina Das Patari unjustly deducted one mark despite a correct answer, citing Trisha’s use of a different pen for the last response. When Trisha questioned the deduction, the teacher allegedly accused her of cheating and made demeaning remarks in front of her classmates.

Devastated and humiliated, Trisha returned home and consumed poison in an apparent suicide attempt. Her family immediately took her to the Barpathari Primary Health Centre, from where she was referred to Shantir Bazar District Hospital due to her critical condition. As her health deteriorated further, she was transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala on Saturday, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day, July 27.

Members of the bereaved family are hoping justice will prevail.
