Agartala, Aug 5: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday underscored the vital role of culture in fostering both mental and spiritual well-being.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the newly reconstituted State-level Cultural Advisory Committee at the Civil Secretariat, the Chief Minister described culture as the true adornment of any society.
He stressed the importance of promoting the state’s unique blend of traditional cultures on a global platform.
Dr. Saha, who also oversees the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department, chairs the 39-member advisory body.
The committee serves as a guiding force for the state government in organising cultural programmes, festivals, and artist workshops.
The meeting was attended by several key officials, including ICA Secretary Dr. Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, Tourism Department Director Prashant Badal Negi, ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharya, and the Vice Chairman of the Cultural Advisory Committee, Subrata Chakraborty, among others.
Highlighting the need for cultural evolution, the Chief Minister said, “It is crucial to modernise our cultural practices through innovative approaches that align with contemporary trends. Simultaneously, we must preserve and nurture Tripura’s composite cultural heritage.
Special efforts should be made to safeguard the traditions of indigenous communities while introducing creative expressions in cultural activities. This approach will help draw younger generations toward their roots.”
Emphasising the Centre’s focus on skill development, Dr. Saha noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi consistently advocates for upskilling across sectors, including culture.
“Developing skills and enhancing the presentation abilities of artists across disciplines must be prioritised. We should identify promising talents from rural areas and extend the necessary support to help them thrive,” he added.
Dr. Saha also raised concern over the gradual disappearance of traditional art forms such as Kirtan (devotional music), puppet dances, and Yatra (folk theatre) due to growing modern influences. He called for renewed efforts to revive these traditions through fresh, innovative methods.
