Agartala, Oct 14: Agartala is all set to host a grand philatelic celebration later this month, as the Department of Posts prepares to organize a North East Circle-level Philately Exhibition in Agartala from October 29 to 31.

The three-day event will be held at Nazrul Kalakshetra, showcasing the art and heritage of stamp collection while promoting philately as a creative and educational hobby among the youth.

Ahead of the event, postal department officials conducted a detailed review of preparations on Monday. The exhibition will feature 130 display frames, presenting nearly 1,800 exhibits from across the country.

These exhibits will highlight rare and thematic collections, reflecting India’s rich postal history and cultural diversity.

The exhibition will have two distinct sections — Invitational Class and Competitive Class. The Invitational Class will include collections from some of India’s most prominent and seasoned philatelists, who will display their rare and valuable stamps.

The Competitive Class, on the other hand, will feature entries from philatelists, hobbyists, and students of Tripura. Participants in this category will compete for state-level awards, which will be presented during the closing ceremony.

One of the key objectives of the event is to encourage school students to take an active interest in philately. Officials highlighted that stamp collection is not merely a hobby, but a creative art form that helps young minds connect with the world’s history, science, literature, environment, and culture.

To engage students, the department has planned a series of interactive activities and competitions, including a stamp design contest, letterbox painting, letter writing, postcard painting, and philatelic quiz.

In addition to competitions, workshops and seminars will be organized by expert philatelists to educate students about various aspects of philately — from curating a collection to designing exhibits for display.

Schools are being encouraged to set up Philately Clubs, which will be supported by the Postal Department through an initial grant of ₹10,000.

Each participating school will receive philatelic kits and sample stamps, which will become part of the school’s permanent collection, ensuring that students continue to engage with philately over time.

A coordination meeting was held on Monday with officials from the Agartala and Dharmanagar postal divisions to finalize the arrangements and discuss ways to make the exhibition more engaging and popular among the public.

Efforts are underway to invite a distinguished chief guest for the inaugural ceremony, and an official announcement will be made once confirmation is received.

This is the first time Tripura will host a North East Circle-level philatelic exhibition, marking a significant milestone for the state’s postal and cultural landscape.

Visitors, including tourists, will have the unique opportunity to obtain pictorial cancellations on letters, postcards, and envelopes — a cherished collectible for any philatelist.

Adding to the attraction, the Postal Department will also release a set of picture postcards depicting the natural beauty, flora, and fauna of the North Eastern region.

These postcards will also be released in Delhi and are expected to be popular among tourists, who often collect them as souvenirs symbolizing their visit to the state and its vibrant culture.

With active participation from philatelists, schools, and postal officials, the upcoming exhibition in Agartala promises to be a colorful and educational event that will rekindle interest in the timeless charm of stamp collection while celebrating the region’s artistic and cultural richness.
