CPIM announces week-long protest across Tripura from Oct 24
Agartala, Oct 22: In support of three-point charter of demands, CPIM, the principal opposition party in Tripura on Wednesday announced a week-long protest beginning on October 24 across Tripura.
CPIM Politburo member and state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said, “Our agitation will begin on October 24 in Agartala and continue until October 31, extending to all district and subdivision headquarters. Our demands include the dismissal of Minister Sudhangshu Das from the state cabinet, the arrest of individuals involved in transporting large consignments of banned cough syrup seized at Jirania railway station, and fast-track trials for those recently arrested in cases of crimes against women.”
Addressing journalists at the Party headquarters, Chaudhury criticized the state government, alleging a sharp rise corruption and in crimes indicating social & moral degradation under the ruling BJP-led three party alliance.
Highlighting recent incidents to underscore concerns about law and order in recent times, he said, a housewife in Mirza, Udaipur, was publicly assaulted and subsequently burnt to death. Also, a 72-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Taidu; and a 14-month-old child was raped and buried alive. While police have arrested the main suspects in these cases, Chaudhury called for their trials to be conducted in fast-track courts, citing repeated instances over the past seven and a half years where primary culprits were acquitted.
Choudhury fired verbal salvos at the ruling party leaders on corruption. On the seizure of banned cough syrup at Jirania railway station, Chaudhury stated, “Two large consignments were intercepted on October 16 and 19, with a market value estimated at several lakhs. Yet the public remains unaware of the transport or logistics agencies responsible for these shipments. Indian Railways requires full documentation of sender and receiver details, which can be traced by the authorities. We demand strict action against the actual offenders and those attempting to shield them.”
The opposition also called for the resignation of Minister Sudhangshu Das, who allegedly admitted on camera that public representatives routinely receive financial benefits from contractors and businessmen awarded government contracts. “Corruption has become so blatant that a minister openly acknowledges such transactions. He must be removed from the state cabinet immediately,” Chaudhury said.
Additionally, CPIM has urged that financial assistance from the Abhaya Fund be provided to the mother of the 14-month-old child killed in Kadamtala, emphasizing the need for compassionate support for victims of such heinous crimes.
