Marital Discord : Mother of an Infant Ends Life in Tripura
A mother of an infant, Tompi Begum, died by suicide at her parental home in Tripura’s Kadamtala after allegedly facing months of marital discord and character-related accusations from her husband. Police have sent the body for post-mortem, while the incident has sparked widespread shock in the locality.
Churaibari (Tripura), Nov 14: A 23-year-old woman died by suicide in Tripura’s North district on Friday, triggering shock and grief across Bishnupur Gram Panchayat’s Ward No. 2.
The deceased, identified as Tompi Begum, had been living at her parents’ residence for the past month.
According to police and family members, Tompi left her infant daughter at a nearby relative’s house on Friday morning. When no one was at home, she locked herself inside her room and allegedly hanged herself using a piece of cloth.
Her husband, Elias Ali, is currently working in Bengaluru. Family sources claimed that the couple had been involved in frequent quarrels over the past several months.
Elias allegedly accused Tompi of having an illicit relationship with his younger brother — an allegation she repeatedly denied.
Despite several family meetings to resolve the matter, the suspicion reportedly continued, and Elias allegedly threatened her over phone calls, her family said.
Tompi’s father, Aftab Uddin, alleged that her mother-in-law left her at her parental home about a month ago. Since then, Tompi had been struggling with emotional distress.
“Perhaps the mental pressure and her husband’s constant suspicion drove her to take this extreme step. We want justice,” Aftab told reporters.
He also claimed that none of her in-laws came to the spot despite being informed about the incident.
Upon receiving a call, Kadamtala police reached the residence, recovered the body, and sent it to the Kadamtala Social Health Centre for post-mortem.
Police sources said the body would be handed over to the family after completion of the autopsy process.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow of mourning across the locality, with residents demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the young woman’s death.
