Situation at the Southern fringe of the State, Sabroom turned volatile after clashes broke out between supporters of ruling BJP and Opposition CPI-M on Wednesday. Several people belonging to both the parties were injured and Police had to fire tear shells to bring the situation under control. Clashes erupted at Sonaibazar of Sabroom under South Tripura.
Police had to fire tear shells to tackle the situation. The clash, according to eyewitnesses, left several BJP and CPM supporters including a former MDC injured. Serious tension and panic among the common people were obvious. Four motorcycles were also damaged in the incident.
As per the reports came from Sabroom claimed that an attack of BJP supporters during CPM’s protest was the source of the massive political clash. According to local police, two separate FIRs have been lodged by the two political parties in connection with the incident.
The CPM had staged the protest as part of party’s state-wide programme to press 16-point charter of demands. Similarly, there was another party programme organized by BJP’s local unit.
A group of BJP activists, local sources said, launched a sudden attack on the CPM workers during their protest. At least eight CPM supporters were injured in the attack incident.
In counter, the CPM workers then moved for an organized attack injuring five BJP men. The situation turned volatile when multiple groups of the ruling party joined the scene from various locations.
In the meantime, SDPO Sabroom reached the spot and made all possible efforts but failed to tackle the situation. Finally, police had to fire tear shells to defuse the tension. Addl. SP, South Tripura visited the spot soon after the incident.
The situation was normal till the last information came in. However, security personnel in adequate numbers were deployed at the spot to avoid any further incident in reference to the previous clash.
Mukulendu Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sabroom police station, said both the parties had lodged two separate complaints in collection with the clash. He, however, made it clear that legal action would be taken against those who violated the COVID19 guidelines.
