Tripura gears up for a civil defence mock drill across eight districts on May 7 to boost disaster preparedness following April 22 terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 innocent civilian mostly tourist, were killed. Led by the District Disaster Management and Civil Defence Corps, the exercise aims to enhance emergency response and public safety.
Agartala May 6: A civil defence mock drill will be conducted on May 7 across Tripura’s eight districts as per the directives of the Union Home Ministry. Civil defence volunteers, students, and other participants will take part in the exercise, which will be managed by the District Disaster Management Department and District Civil Defence Corps. The primary objective of the drill is to enhance awareness and preparedness for emergency and disaster situations.
At a press conference held at the Secretariat’s press conference hall on Tuesday, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey announced the initiative. He emphasized that the core purpose of establishing civil defence in India is to protect citizens’ lives, property, and safety during adverse conditions.
Pandey noted that the drill will evaluate the administration’s preparedness, response capabilities, and coordination among various departments during emergencies. Additionally, it will assess disaster management strategies, rescue operations, emergency healthcare services, and the restoration of critical government services in case of disruptions. He urged the public not to panic, clarifying that the exercise is a routine preparedness activity.

West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, speaking at the press conference, shared that the mock drill in West Tripura will take place at Umakanta Maidan in Agartala. The exercise will commence at 3:30 pm and continue until 6:00 pm, with sirens sounding at 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm. Participants will include civil defence volunteers, Aapda Mitra, NCC cadets, TSR personnel, home guards, firefighters, and medical teams. IGM Hospital, GB Hospital, and the Fire Brigade’s Chaumuhani Fire Station will also be involved in the drill.
Also present at the press conference were J.B. Doyati, Director of the Civil Defence Department, and Sharat Kumar Das, Project Officer of the State Disaster Management Authority.
Civil Defence mock drill in other NE states
IANS reports: The other northeastern states would join in the nationwide civil defence mock drill on Wednesday.
Also, as per the MHA directives, the civil defence mock drill would be conducted in 52 districts in eight northeastern states.
Of the 52 districts, the exercise would be conducted in 15 districts in Assam, followed by 10 in Nagaland, 8 in Tripura, seven in Meghalaya, five each in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and one each district in Mizoram and Sikkim.

In Meghalaya, Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards in an announcement said that the mock exercise on air raid precaution measures would be conducted on Wednesday afternoon from 4 p.m. onwards.
“The air raid siren would be sounded at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening and there would be a “black-out” exercise (power-shutdown) only for two minutes immediately after the siren is sounded,” the announcement said.
The Civil Defence authority requested the people not to panic as this is being done as part of a mock exercise for air raids.
In Manipur, officials said that in the mock exercises, police, Civil Defence, Fire Department, State and National Disaster Response Force, Health Department, Manipur State Power Distribution Company, educational institutions, state museum, and Information and Public Relations Directorate would be involved.
Preparations for the civil defence mock drill are underway in all the eight northeastern states. (Edited)
