Agartala, March 24, 2020: At a time when the entire nation, gripped by the fear of the deadly coronavirus (or COVID-19), is retreating indoors and only venturing forth to stock up on supplies in order to avoid getting an infection, a Tripura school teacher, Moonmoon Deb has been lauded as a ‘hero’ of the working class for announcing to donate 25 per cent of her salary to the daily wage labourers. State hailed and saluted Moonmoon Deb – one of many Covid-19 warroirs.

It is believed that her attempt would further inspire people to come out and lend similar help to the people in need. This is especially necessary in a state like Tripura where lion’s share of the population is dependent on agriculture and other allied works.

Covid-19 Warrior makes humanitarian move

Moonmoon Deb, who hails from Kamalpur sub division under Dhalai district in Tripura, has decided to donate 25 percent of her next month’s salary for the daily wage earners so that they can quarantine themselves at home and break the chain of COVID-19 infection. The Kamalpur based teacher announced her humanitarian move via her social media handle after she wrote to the Chief Minister, informing about her decision.

In her message, the teacher wrote, “In this time of crisis, a section of people are asking about the people who need to work every day to make both ends meet. Demands have been also raised to initiate some relief for them so that they can stay at home with no worries of food and essentials. But, it is not your duty alone. I have decided, as a responsible and sincere citizen of this state, to donate 25 percent of my salary for the people in need”, Deb wrote on her social media handle.

As soon as she posted her message addressing the Chief Minister, people from all section of the society showered praise upon her and hailed her move. Later, some of her acquaintances also decided to come forth to help. Some even demanded formation of a separate relief fund for this crisis only so that people can donate towards the needy.

Corona calamity : A move inspiring others

As soon as she posted her message addressing the Chief Minister, people from cross section of the society showered praise upon her and hailed her move. In no time, some of her known people also declared to do the same for the welfare of the poor people. Some even demanded formation of a separate relief fund for this crisis only so that people could avail the benefit of the needy people. Many hailed her move and opined that government might go for a special relief fund for this Corona calamity only where general people could donate.

They also hoped that if a school teacher could go to such an extent to help the needy people the “business community and people who can afford” might also join the noble move. Not only Moonmoon, eminent social activist and lawyer Shyamal Kanto Paul from Kamalpur also donated Rs 10,000 to chief minister’s relief fund in view of the Covid 19 threat. Similarly, Manikbhandar market merchant association organized an awareness camp and distributed sanitizers among the consumers. (Courtesy: Tripura Times Dt March 24, 2020)
