Ahead of Assembly Polls, man held with firearms in Agartala

One person was arrested with firearms from Chinaihani area under Airport police station in Agartala on Tuesday (Jan 24).

During a Naka checking at the Usha Bazar, on the eve of the February 16 Assembly Polls, Security personnel recovered one pistol, two magazines and 46 rounds (7.62 mm) from a vehicle and arrested one Biman Das.   

According to the police, the security personnel stopped two cars during the Naka checking and Police personnel along with TSR and CRPF jawans searched the vehicles and managed to recover firearms and arrest Biman Das. His house is in Gandhigram area in Agartala.

The police also seized two cars. Police are interrogating the accused. There is also a case against the arrested person in West police station. The arrested person is known to be a notorious anti-social. With Assembly polls remaining just few weeks away, recovery of firearms created panic in the area – however, Police stay alert and vigilant.   

Meantime, Tripura Police succeeded in seizing over Rs 1 lakh 85 thousand from a person during a vehicle checking drive at Ampi market on Tuesday. As per the administrative guidelines, no one is allowed to carry more than Rs 50,000 in cash without a valid document.

During the vehicle checking, Police seized Rs 1,85,930 from one Palash Ghosh, a resident of Sindhichhara in Khowai. Ghosh told Police that he was carrying the money for his business. Police seized the cash, however, released Ghosh. According to the Police, they would probe to inquire if the money is linked with any election purposes.
