CITU Demands Govt aid and works under REGA, TUEP for Flood-Affected People in Tripura

The Central Trade Union (CITU) state committee of Tripura expressed deep concern on Monday over the government's response to the recent deadly floods in Tripura.

They accused the government of neglecting the needs of affected families and failing to provide adequate assistance.

In a press conference, CITU state secretary Sankar Prasad Datta highlighted the plight of many families who had received insufficient or no government aid.

He emphasized that despite the government's announcement of a substantial relief package, implementation had been slow and inadequate.

Datta stated that the CITU would continue to provide relief materials and food to the distressed people in the worst-affected areas. Additionally, they demanded that the government pressure employers to ensure bonus and ex-gratia payments for workers.

The CITU announced plans for a mass deputation to the labor department in five districts on September 25 to advocate for the rights of working-class people.

Former transport minister and CITU leader Manik Dey urged the government to provide adequate work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Tripura Urban Employment Program (TUEP) to help flood-affected people rebuild their lives.

He also demanded compensation for families who lost loved ones and government jobs for one member of each affected family.

Furthermore, Dey called for the government to provide housing assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to those whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

The CITU announced plans for a mass movement to demand the regularization of contractual workers with ten or more years of service and equal pay for equal work for all contractual employees in government departments.

The CITU's state working committee meeting on September 5th discussed various other issues and decided on several actions to advocate for their demands.
