Covid affected son in home quarantine, Admin cremates mother

The Corona 2.0 has taken a heavy toll on human lives and people are witnessing heart wrenching incidences almost daily. The pandemic has hit hard the elderly people and due to Covid scare, people even the sons and daughters are afraid of attending a dying elderly person. However, in Tripura Administration is playing a laudable role in such cases.

Tripura witnessed such a situation where Covid forced an octogenarian woman died due to age related ailments but her children could not stay by her side and local administration had to step in to take the body of deceased for cremation as her Covid affected son shed tears from his ‘isolation’ helplessly and others preferred to stay away suspecting that the lady died of the dreaded disease.

The octogenarian woman Sandhya Rani Roy (87) breathed her last at her residence located at Ramnagar road no 7 in Agartala on Sunday after a prolonged battle with old age ailments. But, none of her family members could turn up for last rites as her son was Covid 19 infected.

Later, the West Tripura administration with the help of volunteers of social organizations performed the last rites of the woman.

It could not be confirmed whether she also got infected by the contagion or not, but locals did not take a chance and preferred to keep a distance from helping in the funeral.

“The house remained sealed since the last few days after her son tested positive to the Covid 19. The son was in home quarantine. Since the administration barred entry inside the house, none of us tried to go inside. The police and civil administration were informed after the news of her death was confirmed by her relatives”, a local said.

Sources said, her daughter and other relatives also refused to come over and participate in the funeral as her Covid 19 status was “uncertain”.

SDM Ashim Saha who played an instrumental role in resolving the problem, said, “We were told that one Sandhya Rani Roy died at her residence today. Her son is Covid 19 positive but the Covid 19 status of the deceased is doubtful. One local doctor has issued a death certificate based on which the mortal remains will be cremated with the help of local social workers, club members and Vishwa Hindu Parishad volunteers”. He also pointed out that volunteers dressed in PPE kits handled the mortal remains as per Covid protocol.

Clarifying further, he said, “As there is no clarity over the deceased’s Covid 19 status, we have decided to perform the final rites as per the Covid guidelines. We can’t risk anyone’s life at this point of time”.
