Cyclonic Storm Remal's fury in Tripura: Hundreds seek refuge in relief camps in West, Unakoti districts

The fury of Cyclone Remal has left several areas of Tripura grappling with widespread flooding and property damage, displacing hundreds of residents who have sought refuge in relief camps set up by the district administrations.

In West Tripura, District Magistrate Dr. Bishal Kumar said the administration has swiftly responded to the crisis, particularly in severely affected areas such as Srilanka Basti and Katakhal. "Around 280 individuals have taken shelter in ten relief camps across the district," Dr. Kumar said.

He further detailed and said about 50 houses in the Sadar sub-division and district have suffered partial damage, with 2-3 homes completely destroyed. The situation is exacerbated by the rising water levels in the rivers, which are under constant surveillance to prevent further disaster.

The incessant downpour over the past two days has caused water levels in the Manu and Deo rivers to surge, inundating low-lying areas and forcing over 750 residents into ten relief camps. Kailashahar town, notably, is experiencing severe waterlogging, prompting efforts to drain water using pumps.

In the Kailashahar subdivision alone, 458 people from 18 families have sought refuge in three relief camps, while seven camps in the Kumarghat subdivision are accommodating 313 people from 73 families.

Subhajit Nath, District Program Officer of the Disaster Management Department, said 15 houses have been partially damaged, one house completely wrecked, and seven houses have sustained severe damage due to the heavy rains.

Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma assured and said administrative measures are robust and ongoing to manage the crisis.

"Today, our team inspected various areas, focusing on the condition of the dams," he said. Despite the rising water levels, he confirmed that the rivers remain below the danger threshold, mitigating immediate fears of a more catastrophic flood.

Cyclone Remal brought heavy rains that inundated large areas of agricultural land in Kalyanpur, particularly near the banks of the Khowai River, causing significant damage to summer crops.

Fish farmers are also struggling, as many ponds have overflowed, causing fish to escape. Similar situation was reported from other parts of the State.
