Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus, which spreads primarily through contaminated water and food. It can lead to paralysis and even death in severe cases. In India, National Polio Day is observed annually on October 24th to raise awareness about polio, its prevention, and the efforts being made to eradicate the disease.

The day aligns with World Polio Day, initiated by Rotary International to commemorate the development of the first effective polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk in 1955. Rotary, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, has been a leader in the global campaign to eradicate polio.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent polio. Both have been instrumental in reducing the number of polio cases globally.Because of vaccination efforts, 99% of the world is now polio-free. However, polio remains endemic in only two countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan.
