A fire broke out in a goods carrier in Colonel Choumuhani area in Agartala on Saturday. After the vehicle caught fire, flames quickly spread and one cake shop suffered damage.

Local people were seen pouring water in buckets to control the fire soon after the vehicle caught fire and before fire tenders reached the spot.

Reasons behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. The incident raised serious concern among the local people of the area regarding the ineffective traffic control system in the capital city.

One fire engine promptly reached the spot and doused the fire. The driver of the vehicle was not found. How the vehicle caught fire is yet to be known at the time of filing the report.

The affected Cake shop owner and local people blamed the traffic control system for their losses.

Pointing fingers at the traffic control system, locals alleged, the goods carrier that caught fire was illegally parked near a cake shop.

"Drivers park their vehicles wherever they want ignoring the traffic rules. Even after the incident, one may find, so many other vehicles remain parked along the sides of the road", an agitated local man said.

Notably, the administration along with traffic personnel and officials conducted raids in several areas in Agartala in the last few days. However, all attempts to ensure enforcement of traffic rules appear to be futile owing to the non - cooperation of a section of drivers and motorists.
