Festival means a gathering. Wangala is the main festival of the Garo community. It brings together people from all walks of life, Finance Minister of Tripura Pranajit Singh Roy commented after inaugurating the 18th State-Level Wangala Festival at Natintila in Udaipur.
The Wangala festival is the main festival of the Garo community, a tribal community in Tripura, India. The festival is a celebration of the harvest and the beginning of a new year.
The festival was jointly organized by the Gomati district administration, the Tripura Garo Union, and the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
Speaking at the event, Singha Roy said the incumbent State government is working to develop the culture and heritage of the tribal communities.
“Through the Wangala festival, the Garo people worship their clan gods and harvest new crops”, the finance minister said and added, the current government has placed Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya on a pedestal of honor.
He said, under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, work is underway for the overall development of tribal areas. The current government of the state has made arrangements for drinking water and housing for all tribals and people from all walks of life.
Speaking at the event, MLA Abhishek Deb Roy said that the culture and heritage of the Garo community is showcased through this festival. The Tripura government has taken special initiatives to promote and preserve the education, culture, and heritage of all communities, including the Garos, the MLA asserted.
Other speakers at the event included Tripura Dafa’s Samajpati Birendra Tripura, Tripura Kshatriya Samaj’s president Jogendra Debbarma, etc.
The event was attended by Chairperson of Udaipur Municipal Council Shital Chandra Majumder, Member of the TTAADC Samrat Jamatia, Matabari Panchayat Samiti Chairman Sujon Kumar Sen, social worker Mintu Chakraborty, Biswajit Sarkar, etc.
Welcome speech was delivered by Information and Cultural Affairs Department’s Deputy Director Manoj Debbarma and the program was presided over by Tripura Garo Union’s president Subhash Marak.
Nine exhibition stalls of various departments were opened at this fair. The guests unveiled the cover of a souvenir on the occasion of the festival.
