PM Modi dials President Putin, reiterates call for dialogue on Ukraine

The conversation took place against the backdrop of recent developments in Russia, including a failed coup attempt on June 24 by a private military company known as the Wagner group. This incident occurred amidst escalating tensions between the Russian Defence Ministry and the group's leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
During the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. The leaders also reviewed the progress made in bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. Both Modi and Putin expressed their commitment to strengthening the special and privileged strategic partnership between their countries, agreeing to maintain communication and work towards further enhancements.
The Kremlin issued a statement highlighting Prime Minister Modi's understanding and support for the decisive actions taken by the Russian leadership to uphold law and order, ensure stability, and protect the security of its citizens in the wake of the events on June 24. The leaders also emphasized the significance of continued implementation of major joint projects across various sectors, noting the substantial growth in trade between the two countries throughout 2022 and the first quarter of this year.
The conversation further touched upon India's role as the current presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the G20, as well as its participation in the BRICS format. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi briefed President Putin on his international engagements, including his recent visit to Washington.
Regarding the situation in Ukraine, President Putin provided an assessment of the current state of affairs in the special military operation zone and highlighted Kiev's reluctance to undertake political and diplomatic measures to resolve the conflict.
