Tripura: 13 seats won but TIPRA Motha secures 2nd position in 6 seats, Biswajit Kalai polls 86.81pc

Regional Party of Tripura TIPRA Motha, contesting in the State Assembly polls for the first time, secured victory in 13 ST seats while the party came second in six seats including Mohanpur (general) Assembly constituency.

There are total 20 ST seats in the State – out of the remaining seats; BJP won six seats while one seat was won by IPFT.

TIPRA Motha contested in total 42 Assembly seats - 20 ST reserved constituencies, 22 General and SC seats. It registered victories in 13 seats - all are ST Reserved seats.

Interesting it may sound, Biswajit Kalai of TIPRA Motha grabbed the attention by securing a whopping 86.81% of votes in Takarjala. He polled 34717 votes while his nearest contestant of IPFT, Bidhan Debbarma polled 2262 votes (5.66%).

The seats won by TIPRA Motha are Simna and Mandwi (in West District), Takarjala, Golaghati and Charilam (in Sepahijala District), Ramchandraghat and Asharambari (in Khowai District), Ampi and Karbook (in Gomati District), Raimavalley, Ambassa and Karamchhera (in Dhalai District) and Kanchanpur (in North District).

Compared to 2018 elections, BJP’s number of ST seats is down by five seats – the saffron party suffered defeats to TIPRA Motha in Golaghati, Charilam, Karbook, Ambassa and Karamchhera. TIPRA Motha’s remaining eight seats are the seats won by IPFT in 2018. While loss in Charilam is a big setback for the ruling BJP, the ruling party failed to retain Golaghati and Ambassa seats.

As far as Karbook and Karamachhera constituencies are concerned both the ex-MLAs Burbomohan Tripura and Dibachandra Hrangkhawl quit the BJP and resigned from the Assembly. While Tripura joined TIPRA Motha, Hrangkhawl re-joined Congress. None of the duo contested in the 2023 election.

Even as consolidation of votes along the ethnic line favouring TIPRA Motha was very strong, BJP managed to win six seats - Krishnapur (in Khowai District), Bagma (in Gomati District), Santirbazar and Manu (in South District), Chawmanu (in Dhalai district) and Pecharthal (in Unakoti district).

Among these six seats, BJP wrested the Manu seat from CPIM.
