Tripura by-polls: Cong to contest in 2 out of 4 seats, fields Sudip and Ashish; Tipra Motha names one for Surma

Tripura Pradesh Congress sprung a surprise as the Party declared its candidate list on Saturday for June 23 Assembly Polls in the State.

Tripura-by-poll-Congress-SudipOut of the four seats that will go for the by-polls, Tripura Congress has decided to contest in two seats only – but refrained from contesting in two other constituencies. In another development, Tipra Motha named candidate for one of those two seats.

There is no surprise element in the announcement of the candidates for two seats – Sudip Roy Barman for 6-Agartala and Ashish Kumar Saha for 8-Bordowali seats - as it was well expected. In fact, Ashish Saha started door-to-door campaign in his Bordowali seat couple of days ago. Supporters of Roy Barman also hit campaign trails in 6-Agartala.

The Leftists, Trinamool Congress and BJP had already announced candidates for all the four Assembly constituencies.

While name of the candidates for two city Assembly seat went along the line of expectations, the party’s decision has decided not to field any candidate in 46-Surma and 57-Jubarajnagar Assembly seats – this has surprised many.

Meanwhile regional Party, Tipra Motha announced name of its candidate for 46 Surma which is reserved for SC – the party nominated Baburam Satnami.  Earlier, supremo of Tipra Motha Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said that his party would contest in two seats. People are waiting to know about the other seat from which Motha will contest.

Even as Congress has not announced alliance with any national or regional party for the upcoming by-polls, the question is why the party has refrained from fielding candidates in Surma and Jubarajnagar.

Commenting on this issue, Congress leaders said, since the moot idea at this point was to oust the BJP from power. And for that any sort of tie up or understanding with any regional party or other party could be very well considered.

However, insiders said the Congress actually left the two seats open for the TIPRA Motha but official statement would not be issued, at least for now.  The support system of the Congress would then work for the TIPRA motha in full swing.
