Tripura Food Minister bats for Humanitarian Values, Collective Efforts to Protect Consumer Rights

The Tripura Department of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs is engaged tirelessly in spreading awareness about consumer rights and duties among the public, said Tripura food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. He also pitched for upholding the humanitarian values and collective efforts for consumer rights protection.

Inaugurating a seminar on Consumer Awareness and an open quiz competition, Chowdhury reiterated Government’s commitment to protect fundamental rights of the consumers of the State.

The Consumer Awareness Program organized by the Tripura Department of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs and the Sadar Mahakuma Administration was held at the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Tuesday.

The Minister inaugurated the event by lighting the inaugural lamp in presence of Judge of High Court of Tripura Justice Arindam Lodh, Mayor of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and MLA Dipak Majumder, In-charge Director of the Department of Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs Animesh Debbarma, Chairman of the Tripura Gramin Bank Satyendra Singh, Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manik Lal das and other distinguished guests.

In his inaugural speech, Sushanta Chowdhury said, “I personally believe that enforcing consumer rights solely through legislation is insufficient. While consumers must be aware of their rights, businesses must also demonstrate their respect for the law and uphold humanitarian values.”

Continuing highlighting the importance of humanitarian values, he said,  in order to safeguard consumer interests, we need to awaken, not erode, values! Consumers must become more aware of their rights. We are all consumers - even a businessman is a consumer. We must all work together to protect consumer rights. Therefore, I call for greater consumer awareness in addition to enforcing laws to safeguard consumer rights.
