Tripura News: Homes Threatened by Erosion as Manu River Breaches Banks, Submerges Villages

Torrential rains led to significant flooding and erosion along the Manu Riverbank in Kailashahar, with the Manu River overflowing its banks and submerging several areas in the town. Owing to the riverbank erosion, several houses are facing the threat of caving into the river. Numerous houses in nearby villages were inundated, forcing residents to seek refuge in local relief camps.

kailashahar-Manu-River-erosionThe water level in the Manu River rose alarmingly close to the danger mark, exacerbating erosion issues in several parts of the Julai Gram Panchayat area along the riverbank. The erosion has also impacted the Kaulikula and Latiyapura Gram Panchayats, causing widespread concern among the local population.

Upon receiving reports of the flooding and erosion, the District Magistrate, Additional District Magistrate, and Sub-Divisional Magistrates promptly visited the affected areas to assess the situation. Their quick response aimed to ensure that immediate measures were taken to provide relief and address the urgent needs of the displaced residents.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy visited the worst-hit areas, including the Julai Gram Panchayat, to evaluate the extent of the damage and interact with the affected residents. Accompanying him were the Unakoti Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati, the DM of the Unakoti District, the Agriculture Department Officer of the District, Julai Gram Panchayat Pradhan, and Gournagar Panchayat Samiti Member, among other officials.

After conducting an on-site inspection, Tinku Roy assured the residents that the administration is fully prepared to combat the crisis and manage the situation. He highlighted that the government has already initiated several measures to combat erosion along the Manu River. The Minister emphasized that work would be prioritized in the most severely affected areas to mitigate further damage and ensure the safety of the residents.

The residents of the affected areas expressed their gratitude to the Minister for his prompt visit and hands-on approach to assessing the damage. His visit provided a much-needed sense of reassurance to the community, with many appreciating the government's efforts to address their concerns and provide necessary assistance during this challenging time, locals opined.
