Tripura tourism minister urged for Sustainable and community based Tourism in Jampui Hill

The Mizo Convention of Jampui Hill submitted an appeal to Sushanta Chowdhury, the  Minister of Tourism, emphasizing the need for sustainable and community-based tourism development in the region.

This follows discussions held during the Tourism Promo Fest in December 2024 at Eden Lodge, Jampui Hill, where local stakeholders and officials highlighted the untapped tourism potential of the area.

Proposed Projects for Tourism Development

In their formal communication, the representatives outlined a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the tourism infrastructure while preserving the region’s ecological balance. Key proposals include:

Sky-Walk and Trekking Route:
A sky-walk is proposed near Eden Lodge in Vanghmun village, complemented by an adjacent trekking route to offer tourists a thrilling experience of Jampui Hill’s breathtaking landscapes.

Eco-Park Development:
The community has identified Vaisam and Hmawngchuan villages in northern Jampui Hill as ideal locations for an eco-park. These areas, largely unexplored and underdeveloped, present an opportunity to boost tourism while engaging the local population in its management.

Upgrading Tlaksih Paragliding Site:
Enhancements to the Tlaksih paragliding site, including better access roads, sanitation, and waste management, have been proposed to attract adventure tourists and ensure environmental sustainability.

Conservation of Thaidawr Tlâng (Betlingchhip):
The highest peak in Tripura, Thaidawr Tlâng, is envisioned as a nature reserve and wildlife park. The Mizo Convention advocates minimal human interference and carefully planned infrastructure at the entry and base of the peak to protect its biodiversity.

Jampui-Hill-tourism-TripuraCore Principles for Development

The Mizo Convention has stressed that all tourism initiatives should adhere to three primary criteria:

Community-Based Tourism: Initiatives must benefit the local population economically by engaging them in tourism-related activities.

Eco-Friendliness: Developments must prioritize environmental conservation and minimize ecological disruptions.

Sustainability: Projects should promote local arts, crafts, and culture, ensuring long-term benefits for the region.

An Untapped Gem of Tripura

Jampui Hill, renowned for its scenic beauty, orange orchards, and cool climate, has long been a hidden gem of Tripura. The proposals aim to transform it into a prominent eco-tourism destination while maintaining its natural charm and cultural integrity.

A Call to Action

In their letter, the Mizo Convention thanked Minister Sushanta Chowdhury for his attention to the region and expressed optimism about the government’s support in realizing these eco-friendly tourism projects.

The community remains hopeful that these initiatives will pave the way for sustainable development while preserving the unique identity of Jampui Hill.
