Agartala, October 22, 2019: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today strongly batted for harnessing Indo-Bangla trade, especially through the North Eastern borders including Tripura. Referring to present trade deficit for Tripura, he urged both the Indian and Bangladesh governments to take steps for augmenting trading. He said this while addressing India-Bangladesh Stakeholders meeting at Guwahati today. He mentioned about setting up SEZ in the State and urged the Bangla investors to invest in Tripura.
Highlighting potentiality North Eastern Region (NER), Deb pointed out that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognized the region as “Astalakshmi”. He urged the Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi who also attended the meeting to support in minimizing trade deficit and allowing NER States to avail marketing avenues in Bangladesh. Tipu Munshi hailed the efforts of Biplab Kumar Deb in enhancing Indo-Bangla relations for betterment of both the countries, especially the NER.
Biplab Kumar Deb made several proposals and placed demands in the meeting for improved trade relations. Eyeing to better economic infrastructure of North East, Deb’s first demand was to related to declaration of proposed Sonamura (Tripura)- Daudkandi (Bangladesh) waterway a notified waterway as part of the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route and removal of port restrictions imposed by Bangladesh so as to improve exports from Tripura to Bangladesh.
He also proposed for setting up of more New Border Haats, shifting of IBB fencing in Manughat LCS, creation of infrastructure in the counterpart LCS and operationalization of Sabroom -Ramgarh LCS.
For Industrial development, Biplab Kumar Deb sought to encourage investment from Bangladesh to Tripura for setting-up of new Industries. Deb also attracted the concern of the authorities for setting up of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Sabroom, Besides, he also batted for implementation of BIN (Bangladesh, India & Nepal) Motor Vehicles Agreements, extension of air connectivity between Agartala and Dhaka, up-gradation of Meter gauge to dual/Broad gauge in Bangladesh side and free movement of Trucks between India and Bangladesh for better connectivity.
“I am confident that the discussions and deliberations undertaken here shall further strengthen the people to
people contact and Indo-Bangladesh relation” The Chief Minister concluded.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today earned huge praise for his role in strengthening ties with
Bangladesh. Minister for Commerce, Bangladesh Tipu Munshi in his remarks said Deb is a transparent political
figure and he bears a clean image.
“The efforts of Deb will make huge impact in strengthening the socio-economic status on both the countries specially in the North East region,” the Bangladesh Commerce minister said.
Apart from this, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also praised the role of Chief Minister Biplab
Kumar Deb for the steps taken by his government against corruption and transforming Tripura into a drug-free state.
