Agartala, May 15, 2025 – In a significant push to advance Northeast India’s development, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, commenced a comprehensive two-day official visit to Agartala and South Tripura district on Thursday. The visit underscores the Central Government’s commitment to inclusive growth, infrastructure development, and citizen-centric governance in the region, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming border areas into hubs of progress.

A Spiritual Start at Mata Tripureswari Temple

Dr. Murugan began his visit with a spiritual tribute, offering prayers at the revered Mata Tripureswari Temple in Udaipur, Gomati district. This iconic temple, a cultural and religious landmark of Tripura, set a meaningful tone for his engagements, reflecting respect for the state’s rich heritage.

Warm Welcome and Development Review in Belonia

Upon arriving at Belonia, the district headquarters of South Tripura, Dr. Murugan was warmly received by District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P. and Superintendent of Police Maurya Krishna Chandra, alongside other senior officials. The minister promptly chaired a high-level review meeting with district authorities to evaluate the progress of key development initiatives.

The discussions focused on flagship Central Government schemes driving transformative change in the region, including:

  • Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), empowering mothers with financial support for maternal and child health.
  • Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), ensuring accessible healthcare for millions.
  • PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), uplifting tribal communities through targeted interventions.

Dr. Murugan emphasized the Prime Minister’s vision of redefining border villages as the “first point” of development rather than the “last mile.” He stressed the need for seamless access to essential services such as clean water, robust road networks, and reliable electricity to foster sustainable growth in these areas.

Minister hails South Tripura’s Progress

Expressing admiration for South Tripura’s achievements, Dr. Murugan noted that the district’s development trajectory surpasses the state’s average growth rate. He lauded the district administration for their dedication and highlighted a standout milestone: the creation of over 28,000 Lakhpati Didis – women entrepreneurs who have achieved annual incomes exceeding Rs 1 lakh. This success underscores the region’s strides in women-led development and local entrepreneurship, aligning with the government’s focus on economic empowerment.

Engaging with Communities and Infrastructure

As the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Dr. Murugan visited the All India Radio (AIR) station in Belonia, where he participated in a live broadcast, connecting directly with listeners. His interaction highlighted the role of media in amplifying government initiatives and fostering community engagement.

The minister also conducted a detailed inspection of the Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital, with a special focus on the pediatric ward. His warm interactions with young patients and healthcare staff underscored the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical services for all.

Furthering his focus on critical infrastructure, Dr. Murugan visited the Muhurighat Land Customs Station and a border checkpost in Belonia. These visits allowed him to assess border management systems and trade facilities, reinforcing the strategic importance of South Tripura in regional connectivity and economic exchange.

Day Two: A Packed Itinerary for Community and Development

Dr. Murugan’s visit continues on Friday with a dynamic schedule aimed at deepening community ties and reviewing grassroots initiatives. Key engagements include:

  • Leading a vibrant Tiranga Yatra in Belonia to promote patriotism and unity.
  • Visiting the Sudhir Sarkar Para Anganwadi Centre under West Jolaibari Gram Panchayat to evaluate early childhood care and nutrition programs.
  • Interacting with members of the Manubazar Cluster Level Federation (CLF) to understand the impact of self-help groups on rural livelihoods.
  • Inspecting the operations of the Sabuj Sathi Goat Rearing and Producers Group under Sukanta Palli Gram Panchayat, a model of sustainable entrepreneurship.

A Vision for a Thriving Northeast

Dr. Murugan’s visit to South Tripura exemplifies the Central Government’s proactive approach to accelerating development in Northeast India. By reviewing critical schemes, engaging with local communities, and inspecting infrastructure, the minister is laying the groundwork for a more connected, prosperous, and empowered region, officials remarked.
