Nor’wester wrecked havoc in different parts of Tripura causing injuries to three persons, damaging properties, crops, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply.

Agartala, April 22, 2020: Nor’wester lashed out in different parts of Tripura today and left behind a trail of destruction. Three persons were injured, numbers of houses were damaged, crops were flattened and electric services were badly hit. SP Sepahijala- Krishnendu Chakravertty luckily had a narrow escape as trees collapsed and fell down on the official residence of the district police chief at Charilam.
A strong wind blew away roofs of many houses under Sepahijala district and Kalyanpur sub-division as well as flattened several other houses. The gale uprooted giant trees which fell on and crushed large number of houses in both the affected areas. Moreover, power supply was severely disrupted due to the thunderstorm. The gale flattened crops in vast areas.
In the storm, three persons including one woman were injured in different areas under Kalyanpur and are undergoing treatment at local hospital. Several parts of the sub-division remained dark following disruption of power supply due to the thunderstorm.

Around 100 houses were damaged in Charilam area under Sepahijala district. Some parts of Bishramganj, Jampuijala and Bishalgarh under the district were the most affected.
The power supply has been disrupted in many places as the trees collapsed and fell down on electric transmission lines. In many areas, electric poles were uprooted.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has directed the Chief Secretary to take necessary steps so that the affected people receive government assistance at earliest. He asked the authorities concerned to ensure that the affected people don’t face any problem in receiving the assistance.
According to official sources, the administration has already initiated a process to assess the total loss and provide assistance to the affected people. Besides, the power employees have been put into action for restoring the electricity services in the affected areas.
In the meantime, the Met department predicted that rain and thunderstorm is very likely to occur in various isolated places of all districts in the next 24 hours.
