December 19, 2017: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met the Cyclone-affected people in Kanyakumari.
He arrived at the southernmost town of the country today after reviewing the cyclone relief works in the Lakshadweep capital Kavaratti.
On his arrival at Kanyakumari, Mr Modi was received by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswamy, his Deputy O Panneerselvam, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Dr M Thambidurai and others.
Later, Prime Minister Modi reviewed the cyclone relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken in Kanyakumari and other affected places in Tamil Nadu.
In the meeting, the state Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy submitted a memorandum detailing the extent of damages and made various demands for undertaking immediate relief works and permanent rehabilitation measures.
Mr Palaniswamy wanted the Centre to release 747 crore rupees for the State Disaster Relief Fund immediately. He said 5255 crore would be required for the restoration of damaged public infrastructure in Kanyakumari on a permanent basis and for rehabilitation works.
The Chief Minister made a further demand for 4047 crore rupees for flood prevention measures in Chennai on a long-term basis.
Furthermore, he asked the Prime Minister to allocate 4218 crore rupees for establishing an integrated fishing harbour I Kanyakumari district and to provide the fishermen satellite-based telecommunication facilities for reliable and all weather communication links. (AIR News)
