While all eyes are fixed on Bihar, people of Garo hills are silently exercising their democratic rights in selecting local bodies. In Meghalaya, polling for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council has begun today. Voting began at 7 this morning and it will continue till 4 in the evening. Sources said, around 5.87 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes.

About 162 candidates are contesting the election from 29 District Council constituencies in the five districts of Garo Hills. Congress Party has fielded maximum number of candidates to be closely followed by National People’s Party. As many as Seventy nine independents are in the fray.

The number of candidates’ party wise includes Congress 29, National People’s Party 26, United Democratic Party 14, BJP 6, NCP and Garo National Council 4 each. Fifteen companies of security personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of polls. There are altogether 788 polling stations of which 255 booths have been identified as hyper sensitive and 108 as sensitive. The counting of votes will take place on October 15th.
