Agartala, January 25, 2019: Thanga Darlong – famous art music flute artist of Tripura selected for Padam Shri Samman. Thanga (90 years) hails from Unakoti. He is a ‘Rosem’ (a flute) player of Tripura Traditional Dance and Music Troupe’. He received National Sangeet Natok Academy in 2014. Thanga Darlong received Academy Fellowship Award in October 2015. He was awarded with State level Vayoshereshtha Samman for 2016.
In a tweet, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said, “Heartiest greetings to Shri Thanga Darlong ji on being conferred the Padma Shri Award. An exceptional musical genius from #Tripura, Shri Darlong has made exemplary efforts for nurturing the indigenous culture of #NorthEast especially the art of playing Rosem musical instrument.”
Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
Meanwhile, PIB reported, the President of India has approved conferment of 112 Padma Awards including one duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) this year. The list comprises 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards. 21 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 11 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 3 Posthumous awardees and 1 transgender person.
