August 12, 2018: Speaking on National Register of Citizens issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the nation that no citizen of India will have to leave the country and all possible opportunities will be given to get their concerns addressed. The PM attacked Congress President Rahul Gandhi and said that he tried his best to provoke people against GST during Gujarat elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that BJP will win the lok sabha elections next year by a bigger margin than in 2014. In an interview to a national daily, the Prime Minister dismissed ‘Mahagathbandhan’ as a failed idea, which cannot succeed because people want a strong and decisive government at the Centre.
The Prime Minister rebutted reports claiming that the caste-based reservations would end and clarified that reservation will continue.
The Prime Minister asserted that his government would keep its promise of updating the National Register of Citizens in Assam. He allayed concerns that the NRC will exclude Indian citizens and assured all possible opportunities will be given to people to get their concerns addressed.
He took on Congress over the National Register of Citizens in Assam, saying the vote bank politics prevented it from implementing accords the party itself concluded in 1972 and 1982 when it was in office.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed hope that Pakistan would work in the direction to make the country ‘terror and violence’ free under the new government of Prime Minister-in-waiting Imran Khan. The Prime Minister wished for good relations between the two countries and said that his government has also taken numerous initiatives in this regard.
Attacking the Congress President, he said that Rahul Gandhi tried his best to provoke people against GST during the Gujarat elections, but people rejected the baseless allegations. He further asserted that many people, including business community, have hailed GST and adopted it whole-heartedly.
On the concerns being raised over incidents of mob violence, the Prime Minister underlined that these incidents need to be condemned in the strongest voice. He said, “The government is fully committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting life and liberty of every citizen.” He further added that no person can, under any circumstances, take the law into his or her hand and commit violence.
