December 28, 2018: As expected ruling BJP swept the by-polls held for vacant seats in different civic bodies. Saffron party bagged 66 out of 67 seats for which by-polls were held on Thursday and CPIM managed victory in one ward, State Election Commission sources said. After the last Assembly Polls, Congress once again, drew blank. It may be noted that BJP had already won in 91 seats uncontested.
In all the four wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), BJP candidates emerged victorious. CPIM won the lone seat from Panisagar in North Tripura District. While BJP leaders thanked people for voting in favour of the Saffron Party, CPIM and Congress leaders accused BJP of adopting terror tactics.
Opposition CPIM leader Pabitra Kar said that a rally would be organised on Saturday to protest the “total farcical civic elections and murder of democracy in Tripura by the BJP government”.
Congress leaders too raised voiced and its leaders – Harekrishna Bhowmik and Tapas Dey – told the media that the party had demanded a re-poll in almost half of the total of 67 seats.
