Agartala (Tripura), June 11: In a heartwarming success story from Tripura, five-year-old Mayank Debnath from Moharchhara Gram Panchayat in Khowai district has reclaimed his health after undergoing free heart surgery under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). The son of Reshmi Das, Mayank had struggled with respiratory issues and weakness since birth, raising concerns about his well-being.
On November 20, 2024, a routine screening camp at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital changed the course of Mayank’s life. Dr. Alok Debnath and Dr. Shanghamitra Das, after examining the boy, suspected a heart condition and urged his mother to seek specialized care. For Reshmi, a single mother facing financial hardship, the prospect of costly treatment seemed out of reach. However, the RBSK team informed her that the program covers advanced medical care at no cost, offering hope for Mayank’s recovery.
Following the initial diagnosis, Mayank was referred to IGM Hospital in Agartala, where an echocardiography on January 6, 2025, confirmed a serious heart condition. Under RBSK’s provisions, which ensure free treatment for critical conditions at reputed facilities, Mayank was sent to Apollo Children’s Hospital in Chennai on May 2, 2025.

On May 7, 2025, Dr. C.S. Muthukumaran, a distinguished pediatric cardiologist, performed a successful heart surgery on Mayank. The procedure was a complete success, and Mayank was discharged on May 11, 2025, returning to Tripura in robust health a few days later.
