Guwahati, July 6: The tallest statue of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder and freedom fighter Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Assam was formally inaugurated in Kokrajhar on Sunday by State Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, coinciding with the commemoration of his 125th birth anniversary.
The grand statue, which now stands as a prominent feature of Kokrajhar town, was unveiled in the presence of senior leaders, public representatives, and a large number of local residents. The project was supported by a Rs 10 lakh grant from the state government, along with contributions from community organizations and local leaders. The statue serves as both a visual centerpiece and a symbol of Dr. Mukherjee’s lasting legacy in Indian political history.
The unveiling event was attended by Bijni MLA Ajay Roy, former Bilasipara MLA Ashok Singhi, Kokrajhar Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma, and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park Committee President Santosh Tarafdar. Hundreds of citizens, including BJP supporters and community members, gathered for the occasion, reflecting the collective pride in this tribute.
In his address, Speaker Daimary described Mukherjee as a guiding figure in India’s nationalist movement and a champion of unity. “This statue is not just an artistic structure—it represents the values and vision that continue to inspire our country,” he said. Other dignitaries also praised the Assam government’s role and the joint efforts of civic and political stakeholders in realizing the project.
Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma highlighted the statue’s cultural and symbolic importance, stating, “It adds a new dimension to Kokrajhar’s identity and stands as a beacon of remembrance and respect.”

Located at a key spot within Kokrajhar town, the statue is expected to serve as a center for civic interaction and historical awareness. The surrounding Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Park is being developed as a space dedicated to public learning and engagement on India’s nationalist heritage.
With its commanding presence and deep historical relevance, the monument underlines Assam’s dedication to honouring national leaders who played a vital role in shaping the country’s political and cultural path. (Edited)
