Chaos prevailed in Santirbazar area in South Tripura after a groupe of bike borne miscreants clashed with Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) activists today. Even as no one was reported to be injured in the melee, several bikes of the unidentified gang were damaged. Police went to the spot, however, no one was arrested in this connection. Notably, GMP is the indigenous wing of CPIM in Tripura.
Local sources said, Santirbazar divisional Committee of GMP held rallies in support of 11-point demand today. Two rallies started from Murasingh Para and Uttar Takma and were approaching to Drop Gate area under Santirbazar. However, as one rally reached Drop gate area of Santirbazar, a group of miscreants riding on motorcycles reached the spot and attacked the GMP activists in the Dropgate area.
While, bike borne miscreants started creating trouble, another rally of GMP also reached the spot and retaliated. Bikers were outnumbered and GMP activists chased away the attackers. In the face of retaliation, miscreants fled away leaving behind their motorcycles. These bikes were found damaged.
Later, Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
“GMP rally came under attack. This is another instance where democratic rights of Opposition parties have been challenged. People are observing everything. People will give a befitting reply to those who are shielding the miscreants and encouraging violence”, GMP activists commented.
Local sources also said, the clash did not go down well with common people. “A sense of panic and tension is obvious in the area among the common people. While people are worried about livelihood and Covid19 related issues, such clashes disturb much required peaceful situation to overcome the present situation”, opined a resident of Drop Gate area.
Several top level GMP of the area attended the meeting and blamed the ruling party for the attack.
