With the initiatives of elephant owners and other mahout, Police arrested the ‘killer’ mahout in Tripura today. The mahout accused of murdering a person and attempting to murder two other of his family members was arrested from Kailashahar’s Irani police station area in Tripura.
On September 5 last, Rahim Ali hacked Kritanjoy Reang to death and severely injured his wife Nirujay and daughter Lakshita Reag in Damcherra. Even as Rahim Ali fled away from the scene and remained fugitive for some days, tension ran high in deceased’s locality in Damchhara area. Locals even agitated staging road blockade at the Dharmanagar-Damchhara National Highway on Monday demanding killer mahout’s arrest.
As the situation turned volatile, another Mahout Syed Ali was severely assaulted by a mob. Syed Ali had to be hospitalized.
There are about 50 elephants owners in Unakoti district itself and they as well as other mahouts were facing serious insecurity. It was then they took the initiative and started gathering information about the absconding mahout. They ultimately learnt that Rahim Ali would visit his village Fulbarikandi today. They waited for his visit and as soon as Rahim Ali came they nabbed him and then handed over to the police this afternoon.
Local sources said, Rahim came out of jail few months ago after serving 12-year jail sentence. He has already married four times while he is in his 40s.
Demanding immediate arrest of a Mahout who allegedly killed one person and left two other injured at Damchhara, local people blocked the Dharmanagar-Damchhara National Highway on Monday.
Notably, a 55-year old person Kritanjoy Reang of Ranjipara under Damchhara was allegedly killed by Rahim Mian, a Mahout by profession, on the intervening nights of Saturday and Sunday. Wife and daughter of the deceased were left critically injured. Local people alleged, the Mahout committed the crime and fled away. Owner of elephant for which Rahim works as Mahout hails from Unakoti district. Reason behind the murder remains unknown.
