Agartala May 13: A shocking incident has rocked the quiet village of Paharpur in Ward No. 4, under Sonapur Gram Panchayat in Sonamura under the Sepahijala District of Tripura.
A woman named Nazma Begum was allegedly kidnapped by her husband, Abu Taher, in a shocking escalation of a troubled marriage marked by years of domestic abuse.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, raising serious concerns about women’s safety and the persistence of domestic violence.
A Marriage Marred by Abuse
According to Nasima Khatun, the mother of the victim, her daughter Nazma Begum was married to Abu Taher, son of the late Ali Miya from Surya Nagar in the same gram panchayat, 12 years ago in a socially recognized ceremony.

However, what began as a hopeful union soon turned into a nightmare. Nasima alleges that Abu Taher subjected Nazma to relentless physical and mental abuse over trivial matters throughout their marriage.
Despite repeated attempts at mediation through village elders, the situation failed to improve. The couple has a young son, currently studying at a local madrasa, who has also been affected by the ongoing turmoil.
In recent days, the abuse reportedly escalated to unbearable levels, forcing Nazma to seek refuge at her parental home. Distraught and desperate, she pleaded with her mother and relatives not to send her back to her husband’s house, fearing for her safety.
Nasima, a single mother struggling with limited resources, expressed her helplessness in supporting her daughter long-term.
Under pressure and after discussions with village elders, it was reluctantly decided that Nazma should return to Abu Taher’s home to attempt reconciliation.
A Brazen Abduction
The situation took a sinister turn on the morning of May 13, 2025, at approximately 9 AM. Nasima had briefly left Nazma alone at home to collect ration supplies when, according to allegations, Abu Taher, accompanied by accomplices, forcibly entered the house and abducted Nazma. The audacity of the act, carried out in broad daylight, has left the community in disbelief.
Upon returning home and learning of her daughter’s abduction, a frantic Nasima sought help from neighbors and local residents. Based on their accounts, she immediately approached the Sonamura police station and filed a formal complaint against Abu Taher. The police have since registered a case and initiated an investigation into the alleged kidnapping.
A Troubling History of Threats
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Nasima revealed a disturbing history involving Abu Taher. She claims that in the past, he had attempted to take Nazma to the state capital under the pretext of selling her, a plan from which Nazma narrowly escaped. After returning home, Nazma confided in her mother about the harrowing experience, which has fueled Nasima’s fears that Abu Taher’s latest actions may be driven by similar malicious intentions.
Nasima’s allegations point to a pattern of control and abuse, raising questions about the safety of women in vulnerable domestic situations. “I’m helpless and terrified for my daughter’s life,” Nasima told local media, her voice trembling with emotion. “I appeal to the state administration to act swiftly and bring my daughter back safely.”
