Infanticide shock Sonamura: A Mother’s Unthinkable Act
In a heart-wrenching incident in Ram Padapara ADC Village, Suchitra Debbarma, a mother of two, faces allegations of smothering her five-month-old daughter to death with a pillow on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The chilling act reportedly took place while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away, earning a livelihood through rubber tapping in local plantations.
The couple, who also have a seven-year-old son, were allegedly grappling with marital discord stemming from Suchitra’s year-long extramarital affair with a cousin brother of her father-in-law.
The residents of Ram Padapara ADC Village are reeling in disbelief, struggling to comprehend how a mother could commit such an act. According to police sources, the infant’s death was a tragic consequence of the family’s internal strife.
The Sonamura Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das, responded swiftly, rushing to the scene upon receiving the news. Suchitra Debbarma was arrested, and the lifeless body of the five-month-old was sent to Sonamura Hospital for a postmortem examination.
While no formal complaint has been filed by the family as of now, the police have taken the initiative, registering a suo moto case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
This tragedy has been cited by the locals as a stark example of societal degradation, raising questions about the moral fabric and the pressures that drive such unthinkable acts.
A Father-in-Law’s Depravity
In a separate disturbing case, Sonamura Police arrested 50-year-old Mukles Miya, a resident of Bara Pathar Para in Ormai village, for allegedly assaulting his daughter-in-law sexually on April 14, 2025.
Mukles, taking advantage of his son’s absence, is accused of committing a heinous act to satisfy his lust, further deepening the community’s sense of shock and dismay. Following the assault, the victim filed a complaint with the Sonamura Police Station, seeking justice.
However, Mukles fled his home, evading authorities for nearly three and a half months. After an extensive manhunt, police apprehended him on Sunday, August 10, 2025, from a location near Sonamura sub-divisional headquarters.

He was promptly presented in court, which ordered his detention at Sonamura jail in Rabindra Nagar, where he remains in custody. The case has added fuel to growing concerns about the erosion of familial and societal values, with residents expressing horror at the betrayal of trust within a family.
Mukles Miya’s actions have been condemned as a heinous act further tarnishing the community’s sense of safety and integrity.
Decline in societal values?
These incidents have left Sonamura grappling with a profound sense of loss and disillusionment. Both incidents highlight a troubling trend of moral decay, said a Sonamura based businessman.
“From a mother allegedly driven to infanticide by personal turmoil to a father-in-law accused of violating familial bonds, the cases reflect deep-seated issues that challenge the social order”, said Police nab the accused persons.
