Today, young leaders from across our region have come together with one shared vision, to unite our voices and form a single political platform that truly represents the aspirations of our people. Inspired by the legacy of our great leaders, we are taking the first step toward building a strong, collective voice for the North East. A committee will be formed to chart the way forward. Together, we stand for a stronger, more united North East!: NPP chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma

Agartala Nov 4: In a significant political development, the National People’s Party (NPP), the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), and several other regional parties and leaders from the Northeastern states on Tuesday announced the formation of a new political front under a unified banner to champion the causes of the region’s indigenous communities.

Announcing the initiative, NPP chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that a nine-member committee has been constituted to finalise the framework of the proposed platform within 45 days. The committee will be convened by NPP’s National Working President J. M. Sangma, with former BJP national spokesperson and former Nagaland minister Mmhonlumo Kikon serving as the member secretary. Representatives from all the participating parties will also be part of this panel.

A joint statement outlining the decision was released during a press briefing held at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi. The statement was jointly signed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, TMP supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Mmhonlumo Kikon, and Daniel Langthasa, founder of the People’s Party from Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

Reading from the joint declaration, CM Sangma said that leaders across Northeastern states have made a “collective and historic announcement” to establish a political alliance that genuinely represents the aspirations of the people of the region.

“For years, young leaders from the Northeast have voiced similar issues and concerns, but from separate political stages. We have now realised that our true strength lies in unity, and it’s time our people have one collective voice,” Sangma stated.

Drawing inspiration from the legacy of visionary leaders who fought for the region’s identity and development, Sangma added, “We are determined to carry their ideals forward through a shared vision for the Northeast’s future.”

He described Tuesday’s announcement as the first step toward building this common platform, emphasizing that the nine-member committee will deliberate on the modalities, structure, and future course of the proposed political entity.

“Our united effort stems from a conviction that the people of the Northeast deserve to be heard, respected, and represented through a strong, indigenous, and unified political voice at the national level,” Sangma asserted, while clarifying that the parties remain part of the current Central government.

TMP founder and former Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma said the Northeast region needs greater articulation and cohesion. He noted that the region, sharing long international borders with several countries, could collectively address cross-border issues such as the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh.

“We have no personal or political ambitions. Our only goal is to safeguard the interests of the people of the Northeast under a united leadership. We are not against any political party or individual — our objective is purely regional welfare,” Debbarma told reporters.

The TMP currently allies with the ruling BJP in Tripura, while the NPP is a constituent of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The NPP, the only national party originating from the Northeast, has its political presence in Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. In Meghalaya, the BJP supports the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government with two MLAs.

In his X post, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma wrote, “If we speak separately we are insignificant! If we speak together then the nation cannot ignore our region . Petty differences and narrow interest have sent us backwards . Time for change has come ! Let’s fight for our next generation together”. (With inputs from IANS)
