Dharmanagar youth shot during anti-smuggling operation
Dharmanagar, Nov 24 : A 27-year-old youth was injured on today during an anti-smuggling operation Border Security Force (BSF) along the Indo–Bangladesh border in North Tripura’s Brajendranagar sector.
The incident occurred at around 10:25 am near BFL pillars 138–139 and Gate No. 10, under Brajendranagar BOP of the BSF’s 97th Battalion C-Company.
According to preliminary reports, BSF personnel detected suspicious movement when an individual was allegedly attempting to cut through the border fencing, reportedly to smuggle goods across the international boundary.
The injured youth has been identified as Akash Das, resident of Ward No. 2 under Agnipasa Gram Panchayat and son of the late Gopal Das.
On being intercepted by security personnel, the situation reportedly escalated, compelling BSF jawans to fire a round to restrain the attempt.
This resulted in Akash Das sustaining a gunshot injury to the abdomen.
He was rushed immediately to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where doctors confirmed the injury. Hospital sources revealed, his condition is stable but the bullet may still be lodged inside.
In line with medical response protocols and technology-enabled trauma care systems, he has been referred to GB Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
The firing incident briefly sparked tension in the surrounding border villages, but the situation is now under control.
Both local police authorities and BSF command structures have launched parallel investigations.
With border security challenges rising across the Indo–Bangladesh belt, agencies have tightened vigil. The BSF patrolling along the Indo-Bangla Border has been stepped up with the backing from local police along the international border in the State.
The focus is on to curb the incidents of illegal immigration from Bangladesh, apart from unrelenting smuggling bids.
In view of emerging political chaos in Bangladesh, trans-border smuggling and unauthorized immigration have become a major headache.
