Agartala/Dharmanagar (Tripura), July 4, 2025: Young chess players from Dharmanagar under the North Tripura District have brought immense pride to their hometown and state with stellar performances at the inaugural Assam University International Rated Chess Tournament in Silchar.

Competing against nearly 250 players from India and Nepal over seven days, from June 28 to July 4, the Two sisters, Uttara and Prerana Debnath, siblings Anupam and Abhinav Nath, and Shatadru Das showcased remarkable skill and determination.

Uttara and Prerana excelled in the Under-14 category, dominating both the Classical and Rapid formats. In the Classical format, Prerana secured second place, with Uttara taking third. The sisters swapped positions in the Rapid category, with Uttara claiming second and Prerana third.

Daughters of journalist Uttam Debnath and homemaker Popsi Debnath from Padmapur in Dharmanagar, the duo’s passion for chess was sparked and nurtured by their father’s early training. Their achievements have filled their family and the Dharmanagar community with pride.

Anupam and Abhinav, also from Dharmanagar, dominated the Under-14 boys’ category, securing first and second places, respectively. Their parents, Anidra and Shukla Nath, expressed overwhelming joy at their sons’ success. Meanwhile, Shatadru Das, son of Sujit Das and Sabita Chowdhury from Post Office Road, earned an impressive sixth place in the 1400–1500 rating category.

Held in an “Open to All” format, the tournament featured fierce competition from players representing 28 Indian states.

The exceptional performances of Tripura’s young talents highlight their resilience and skill, marking a significant milestone for the state’s burgeoning chess scene.

Local sports enthusiasts and residents are optimistic that these promising players will continue to elevate Tripura’s reputation on the global chess stage.

Meanwhile, Aradhya Das, Northeast India’s youngest Candidate Master, added another feather to her cap by excelling in the Blitz format at the inaugural Assam University Blitz Chess Tournament, held at Netaji Mukta Mancha in Silchar.

The event concluded on Thursday night, showcasing intense competition among top chess talents.Representing Tripura, Aradhya scored an impressive 6.5 points, securing 21st place and earning a cash prize of Rs 2,500 for her outstanding performance.

Assam’s Abhrajyoti Nath clinched the championship title with 8.5 points. Among the top 50 participants, Shakya Singh Modak claimed 31st place with 6 points, while Shekhowat Hossain and Abhinav Nath finished 45th and 48th, respectively.

The tournament was overseen by International Arbiter Anupam Bhattacharya, ensuring a seamless and competitive event. Aradhya’s success in Blitz, following her earlier triumphs in Rapid chess, underscores her growing prominence in the chess world and brings pride to Tripura.
