Drinking Water Crisis: Women Block Road in North Tripura
Churaibari (Tripura) Nov 30: A persistent drinking water shortage has triggered a road blockade by a women’s group near Lower Gate on the Kadamtala–Dharmanagar main road in North Tripura’s Kadamtala Block.
The protest, led predominantly by members of the Pramila Bahini, began at approximately 10:30 AM Sunday, highlighting residents’ growing frustration in Ward No. 4 of Bishnupur tea garden area, where water supply has been scarce for over two months.
Locals, who have repeatedly appealed to the Kadamtala Panchayat and district administration for relief, say their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
“Despite numerous complaints, no effective action was taken,” said one resident. The blockade sought urgent intervention to restore clean drinking water access to the affected villages.
Kadamtala Police responded promptly to the blockade but were unable to disperse the protesters.
The situation was defused when Kadamtala Panchayat Samiti Chairman Mihir Ranjan Nath arrived on the scene.
Nath assured the crowd that immediate arrangements to supply drinking water would be implemented, prompting the group to lift the blockade peacefully.
The protest caused significant traffic disruption, resulting in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the busy Kadamtala–Dharmanagar route, affecting daily commuters and local transport.

“This incident underscores the pressing need for sustainable drinking water solutions in North Tripura’s rural areas and the growing role of grassroots women’s groups in advocating for basic public services”, local villagers commented.
