Empowering SHGs: New infra facility opened in North Tripura
Dharmanagar, Nov 21: Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have become an important force in promoting women’s empowerment and rural economic progress across Tripura.
By encouraging collective savings, independent income generation, and small-scale entrepreneurship, SHGs have helped many families move toward financial stability.
According to Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) there are 54,052 SHGs in 58 blocks across the State as on October 31, 2025.
However, their sustainable growth depends on access to structured skill development facilities and dedicated local marketplaces, where members can improve their capabilities, enhance product quality, and connect with regular buyers.
In this context, Dharmanagar in North Tripura marked an important step with the inauguration of the newly constructed ‘Sonchiraiya City Livelihood Centre’ on Friday, November 20 at Kalibari Road, an initiative of the Dharmanagar Municipal Council.
The centre was inaugurated by North Tripura District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, in the presence of Additional District Magistrate P.P.L. Darlong, Dharmanagar Municipality CEO and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debjani Chowdhury, Municipal Chairperson Mitali Das Sen, several councillors, and other dignitaries.
The facility was formally opened through a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the lighting of a traditional lamp.
Speaking at the event, Chandni Chandran said that the centre would play a key role in supporting income generation, training, and employment opportunities for SHGs in Dharmanagar.
She pointed out that while SHG members had opportunities to display their products during events in the town, the lack of a permanent marketplace limited their ability to increase sales.
She expressed hope that the new livelihood centre would enable empowering SHGs by ensuring their products reach a larger and more consistent customer base.
Local residents believe that the inauguration of the ‘Sonchiraiya City Livelihood Centre’ will not only enhance market access but also create valuable skill development and training opportunities for unemployed youth in the area.
The new initiative is expected to strengthen the economic activities of SHGs and make grassroots entrepreneurship more dynamic and sustainable in the region.
