Divyangjan (specially-abled individuals) are proving their abilities across various fields, demonstrating that they are no less than anyone. Highlighting their contributions and capabilities, Chief Minister of Tripura Prof. Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the two-day state-level Khelo Tripura Para Games 2024 at Swami Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala on Wednesday.
The event is part of the celebrations for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 and has been jointly organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education along with the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports. The games will continue until December 19.
At the inaugural ceremony, the Chief Minister emphasized the transformative impact of such sporting events on the mental and physical well-being of Divyangjan.
He highlighted how sports foster discipline, perseverance, responsibility, and patriotism among participants.
The event will feature diverse activities such as blind cricket, chess, carrom, and football. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering Divyangjan through various initiatives, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas”.
Dr. Saha outlined key measures taken under the Tripura Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2018, including a 4% reservation in direct recruitment and promotions in government jobs and a 5% reservation in higher education and government-aided institutions. Additionally, 35,018 Unique Disability Identity (UDID) cards have been issued, and 15,098 individuals with disabilities receive a monthly social pension of Rs 2,000.
Support for Divyangjan Expands
Tinku Roy, Minister of Social Welfare, Social Education, and Youth Affairs and Sports, highlighted the inclusive approach adopted by the state government. He announced that individuals with a 60% or higher disability are now eligible for social pensions, extending support to more beneficiaries. The state has also implemented various programs and policies to protect the rights and well-being of Divyangjan.
Presiding over the event, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Deepak Majumdar echoed these sentiments, emphasizing societal responsibility in supporting Divyangjan in education, sports, and other fields.
Special Olympics Bharat Promotes Skill Development
Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, commended the initiative, stressing that such events unlock the latent talents of Divyangjan athletes. She acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s introduction of the term “Divyang,” which recognizes the special abilities of these individuals. Dr. Nadda encouraged Divyangjan athletes to excel by associating with Special Olympics Bharat, which fosters growth and development.
Policy Launch and Recognition
During the event, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha launched the Tripura Policy for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2024. Several meritorious Divyang students were honored with the Chief Minister’s Merit Award for their outstanding performance in secondary and higher secondary examinations. Dr. Saha personally handed over financial awards, UDID cards, and social pension benefits to deserving individuals.
