Agartala: Tripura Police have shifted their focus from the arrests of eight Bangladeshi nationals to tracing their suspected travel trail, including the route they allegedly used to enter India, the people who may have assisted them, and the arrangements made for their movement towards other parts of the country.

The eight arrests followed two intelligence-based operations at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala on June 26 and June 27. Police intercepted the individuals before they could board flights and have started a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding their alleged entry and movement.

A senior police official said the Airport Police received specific intelligence about the movement of four Bangladeshi nationals at MBB Airport on June 26. According to the information received by the authorities, the individuals were expected to arrive at the airport and board a flight to another state.

Acting on the alert, police teams coordinated with MBB Airport authorities and staff members. The operation resulted in the detention of all four persons before they could proceed with their journey.

Following the first operation, investigators questioned the detained individuals at the Airport Police Station. During the interrogation, police gathered information that led them to suspect the involvement of additional persons connected with the movement plan.

Based on the leads obtained during questioning, police conducted another operation at the airport on June 27. The second action resulted in the arrest of four more Bangladeshi nationals, increasing the total number of arrested persons to eight.

Police Examine Route, Contacts and Travel Arrangements

The investigation is now centred on reconstructing the alleged movement chain. Police officials are examining how the accused persons entered India, which route they followed after crossing the border, and how they reached Agartala.

Investigators are also trying to determine whether any local contacts, intermediaries, or organised groups helped arrange their travel.

Preliminary findings indicate that the arrested persons were planning to travel towards Guwahati. However, officials are verifying the complete travel details, including their intended destination, possible stopovers, and the purpose behind their movement.

The investigation team is also analysing whether the arrested persons entered India individually or through assistance from a coordinated network.

Digital Evidence Under Scanner

Police have seized mobile phones and other personal belongings from the arrested individuals. Investigators are examining these items to collect digital evidence that may reveal communication records, travel arrangements, and possible links with other persons.

Officials believe the analysis of electronic devices could provide important clues about those who may have facilitated the alleged movement.

The police official said all eight arrested persons are male and confirmed that the investigation is continuing. Authorities are attempting to identify any additional individuals who may have played a role in arranging their entry or movement inside India.

Court Proceedings and Further Interrogation

Four of the arrested persons were produced before a local court on Sunday. The remaining four are currently in police custody, and authorities have sought a five-day remand period for further questioning.

Police officials said the additional custody period would help investigators collect more information about the suspected route, contacts, and possible links behind the alleged cross-border movement.

Tripura’s Border Security Concerns

The case has once again brought attention to Tripura’s sensitive geographical position. The northeastern state shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh and remains vulnerable to challenges related to illegal movement, smuggling, and cross-border crimes.

Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides, making border monitoring a major security priority. Although most sections of the international border have fencing, security agencies continue surveillance in vulnerable areas.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has increased monitoring activities along the border, particularly after political and security developments in Bangladesh last year.

Security agencies have also been focusing on technology-based solutions to strengthen border management. The proposed Smart Border Management initiatives aim to improve surveillance capabilities and support efforts to prevent illegal crossings.

Investigation Continues

The latest arrests have opened a broader investigation into the alleged travel network behind the movement of the eight Bangladeshi nationals. Police are now working to establish the complete chain — from the suspected entry point to the final travel destination.

The next phase of the investigation will see police identify possible facilitators, verify the accused persons’ travel history, and determine whether others played a role in the alleged movement plan.
