Khumulwng violence: Communist mindset still visible in many parties, says Dr Saha
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated that remnants of communist political culture continue to influence many parties in India, and asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does not endorse politics driven by violence or intimidation.
Agartala Nov 21: During a field visit to Khumulwng, the headquarters of the Autonomous District Council, the Chief Minister inspected the houses of BJP workers who were reportedly attacked.
Notably, political tension flared up in Khumulwng after recent incidents of violence allegedly unleashed by BJP’s ally in Tripura, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma-led TIPRA Motha Party (TMP).
Damage Assessment & Warning for Future
According to him, the affected families faced brutal assault along with large-scale vandalism and looting of valuables including cash, ornaments, and household items like refrigerator etc.
The Chief Minister mentioned, the BJP party office at Khumulwng was vandalized, adding that such incidents had occurred earlier as well.
He asserted that the government would respond firmly and take future actions to prevent recurrence.
Communist legacy of violence
Dr. Saha emphasized that political violence, arson, and intimidation in States like Tripura, West Bengal and Kerala were legacies inherited from the CPIM era.
He noted that such culture continues, even after CPIM was dethroned from power in Tripura and Bengal.
Dr. Saha mentioned that similar conditions were seen in West Bengal and so also in Kerala as communist-style functioning still influences individuals and groups in different regions.
He appealed for political transformation rooted in democratic principles rather than coercion.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the BJP stands for administration focused on public welfare and democratic conduct.
Law and Enforcement Outlook
He asserted that the government would not legitimize violence-based politics under any circumstances.
Police and legal mechanisms, he said, would function independently to ensure accountability.
The Chief Minister also called upon political actors to abandon old-era aggression, stating that forceful tactics would not be accepted by the people.
Dr. Saha was accompanied by BJP State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma, local mandal leadership, and other party representatives during the inspection visit.

Clashes between BJP and it’s ally TMP is nothing new. As BJP is trying to expand its organization in tribal dominated areas in view of ensuing TTAADC polls, supporters of both parties are competing against each other to establish its control.
