LaQshya Project: Teliamura Hospital Earns National Recognition
Agartala Nov 7: In a landmark achievement for Tripura’s healthcare sector, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital has earned national recognition under the ‘LaQshya – Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative’ of the National Health Mission (NHM) for its exemplary performance in providing quality maternal and newborn care.
A team from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, visited the hospital in September this year to evaluate its facilities, service standards, and implementation of LaQshya Project protocols. After a detailed inspection and assessment across all prescribed parameters, the team found the hospital’s performance “highly satisfactory,” leading to the conferment of central accreditation – a rare distinction for a sub-divisional healthcare facility in the Northeast.
As part of this recognition, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital will receive a cash award of Rs 6 lakh from the Union Ministry. Moreover, if the hospital continues to maintain the same standards of service and quality care, it will be eligible for an annual grant of Rs 6 lakh every year from the Centre.
This achievement is particularly significant as the hospital had only recently, in October 2023, commissioned a fully functional Caesarean Operation Theatre, thereby strengthening its maternal and neonatal care infrastructure.
LaQshya Project: Raising the Bar in Maternal and Newborn Care
The LaQshya (Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative), launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2017, seeks to ensure safe and dignified childbirth, enhance the infrastructure and quality of labour rooms and operation theatres, and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

Under this initiative, healthcare institutions are assessed on a wide range of indicators, including cleanliness and hygiene in labour rooms, equipment maintenance, quality of patient care, promptness of service, infection control practices, and training of healthcare personnel. The comprehensive evaluation process also covers hospital management systems and patient feedback mechanisms.
Recognition of Dedication and Teamwork
To celebrate this milestone, the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Health Department organized a press conference on Friday, which was attended by Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Raja Jamatia, Gynecologist Dr. Sushanta Saha, and other senior officials from the Health Department.
“This success is not only for our hospital but for every citizen of Teliamura. We have always placed the safety of mothers and newborns at the forefront of our services. This national recognition will inspire us to strive for even higher standards in healthcare delivery.”
Speaking to reporters, SDMO Raja Jamatia said, “This success is not only for our hospital but for every citizen of Teliamura. We have always placed the safety of mothers and newborns at the forefront of our services. This national recognition will inspire us to strive for even higher standards in healthcare delivery.”
He added that the success of the LaQshya project in Teliamura was made possible through the collective efforts of trained healthcare professionals, improved medical infrastructure, and consistent monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
“Through LaQshya, we have been able to significantly enhance the quality of intrapartum care. Regular staff training, modern equipment, and adherence to national quality benchmarks have been key to this achievement,” he said.
A Milestone for Tripura’s Health Sector
The recognition is being hailed as a matter of immense pride for the state’s health administration and the people of Teliamura.
Local residents and hospital staff have expressed their joy and pride over the achievement, describing Teliamura Hospital as a “model institution” for maternal safety and newborn care.
“In ensuring the safety of mothers and infants, Teliamura has set an example for the entire state,” said a senior health worker at the hospital.
With this recognition, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital has not only reaffirmed its commitment to quality healthcare but also positioned itself as a symbol of hope and excellence in Tripura’s ongoing journey toward improved public health standards.
