NMC Approves 50 More MBBS Seats for TMC. CM Dr Saha Thanks PM Modi and Health Minister Nadda
Agartala, Nov 4: In a major boost to medical education in Tripura, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats for Tripura Medical College and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in Agartala.
Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha shared the development through a social media post on Monday, terming it “another great news for medical education aspirants.”
With this latest approval, the total MBBS intake at Tripura Medical College (TMC) has risen from 100 to 150, taking the overall number of MBBS seats in the state to 450.
Highlighting the state’s progress in medical education, the Chief Minister said, “In the last three years, we have achieved a record addition of 225 MBBS seats in the state—a remarkable milestone in our continuous efforts to strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure.”

Expressing gratitude for the Centre’s support, Dr. Saha wrote, “My sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda Ji for their unwavering support and guidance in advancing Tripura’s health sector.”
The move is expected to provide greater opportunities for aspiring medical students from Tripura and the region, while also helping to meet the state’s growing healthcare needs.
According to NMC website, The National Medical Commission (NMC) was established under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, enacted by the Parliament. The Act came into effect on September 25, 2020, following its publication in the official gazette on September 24, 2020. With its implementation, the Board of Governors, which had replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) under Section 3A of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, was officially dissolved.
The primary objectives of the National Medical Commission include:
(i) enhancing access to quality and affordable medical education;
(ii) ensuring the presence of sufficient, skilled medical professionals across all regions of the country;
(iii) promoting equitable and universal healthcare with a focus on community health, thereby making medical services accessible to every citizen;
(iv) motivating medical professionals to incorporate the latest research findings into their practice and contribute to medical research;
(v) conducting transparent and objective periodic assessments of medical institutions;
(vi) maintaining a national medical register;
(vii) upholding high ethical standards in every aspect of medical service; and
(viii) establishing an efficient grievance redressal system.
