Senior Citizens of Jampui Hill Observe International Day of Older Persons. Tripura’s Support to Mizo Community Praised by Mizoram Minister Vanlalruata
Jampui Hill (Tripura) Oct 1: Thanzauva Hall, Hmunpui, Jampui Hill came alive today as hundreds of senior citizens gathered to mark the International Day of Older Persons.
The event was organised by the Mizo Upa Pawl (MUP) – the Mizo Senior Citizens’ Association of Jampui Hill Area – which currently has 692 active members from ten branches across the hill range.
The programme was presided over by LT Muana Royte, president of MUP, while Lalthanzuala Sailo, Secretary of MUP, introduced the distinguished guests.
Among them was BC Nunga, BAC Chairman of Jampui Hill RD Block, who, in his address, conveyed goodwill messages from the Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr) Manik Saha and Minister Santana Chakma.
He also highlighted various state and central government initiatives aimed at the welfare of elderly citizens.
This year’s celebration carried special significance with the presence of PC Vanlalruata, Agriculture Minister of Mizoram, as the Chief Guest.
In his remarks, the Minister revealed that despite invitations from his own constituency in Mizoram, he chose to attend the Jampui Hill event out of deep personal attachment and emotional affinity to the region.
The Mizoram Minister expressed gratitude to the Government of Tripura for its continued support to the Mizo community of Jampui Hill through the provision of good roads, electricity, tourism development, and other infrastructure—many of which, he noted, serve as role models even for Mizoram.

He underlined the invaluable contributions of senior citizens—past and present—stating that their wisdom and experience will remain indispensable in the fast-evolving 21st-century world.
Adding depth to the occasion, Dr. Zairemthiama Pachuau shared his reflections on the status of elderly persons in Jampui Hill in relation to this year’s global theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights” as follows:
Active Participation: He highlighted that older persons are not passive recipients of care but active participants in shaping their communities and the world.
Advocacy: He stressed the importance of elderly individuals voicing their aspirations, advocating for their well-being, and demanding protection of their human rights.
Inclusion: He noted that by centering the well-being and rights of older persons, society moves towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all age groups.
A special memorial moment was observed in remembrance of 23 elderly persons who had passed away during the past year.
In addition, five living elders aged 90 years and above were honoured with gratitude and respect, symbolising the community’s deep appreciation for their longevity and contributions.
The event was further enriched by the support and participation of organisations such as the Mizo Convention, Tripura Group YMA, Jampui Block MHIP (women’s association), and the Langkaih Area MUP from across the border in Mizoram.
The day concluded with a renewed sense of community spirit, honoring the elders who continue to play a vital role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of Jampui Hill.
