Fresh tension in Dharmanagar: Cong-BJP Face-off at SP Office
Dharmanagar, Nov 27: Tension flared up in Dharmanagar today once again after Congress MLA Birajit Sinha led a delegation to the North District Superintendent of Police (SP).
Soon, situation turned volatile as Congress and BJP supporters came face to face at the premises of the SP office.
However, security forces managed to keep the situation under control.
Notably Dharmanagar has been witnessing political violence following a series of violent incidents, including alleged late-night arson attempt, attacks on a CPIM rally followed by vandalism at the District Congress Bhavan in last two days.
To take stock of the situation Senior Congress leader and Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha visited the violence-hit areas this afternoon
Sinha, accompanied by Kailashahar District Congress president Md. Badruduzzaman and other party leaders, was briefed by local Congress functionaries about the back-to-back attacks that have shaken the town over the past two days.
Party workers alleged that miscreants present inside the premises attempted to attack them again. Security forces intervened swiftly to prevent further escalation.
The district administration later said adequate security personnel have been deployed across Dharmanagar and assured strict action against those involved.
Recap: Violence on Nov 26
The unrest started on November 26, around 12:30 p.m., when a CPIM rally was allegedly attacked by BJP supporters. Local sources said a peaceful march was disrupted after a group entered the rally from behind and assaulted the rallists, leaving several CPIM leaders and workers injured.
Among the injured were former MLA Amitabha Dutta, who was seen profusely bleeding, along with leaders Abhijit Dey, Ratan Roy, and others.
Eyewitnesses claimed BJP supporters brandishing party flags stormed the main road, creating panic among residents.
Following the rally attack, miscreants also vandalised the District Congress Office, aggravating the already volatile atmosphere.
Residents described the situation as “alarming” as sporadic clashes and uncertainty gripped the town.
Prior to November 26 attacks, an alleged arson attempt at the century-old Dharmanagar District Congress Bhavan late on November 25 sparked widespread concern.
Congress workers arriving at the site on November 26 morning found burnt remnants of the national flag, broken furniture, and multiple signs of attempted arson inside the rooms.
Police Inaction Alleged
Both CPIM and Congress leaders accused the police of inaction, claiming officers on duty remained passive observers while violence unfolded.

Civil society groups have also criticised the administration, demanding urgent measures to restore normalcy and ensure accountability.
Police authorities have not issued an official statement on the allegations.

With multiple incidents unfolding within 48 hours, simmering tension in Dharmanagar is palpable.
Residents have urged the administration to restore law and order immediately and take strict action against those responsible for the attacks.
