Tremors in Tripura after quake of magnitude 5.7 hits Bangladesh
Agartala, Nov 21: Jolt on Friday morning in Tripura as earthquake tremors were felt in different areas of the state. The epicenter of the quake was at Narsingdi district of Bangladesh.
IANS reported, the magnitude of the tremor on the Richter scale was recorded at 5.7 in Bangladesh, and the tremors were felt in West Bengal.
However, there is no report of casualty or damage to property in Tripura, so far.
Disaster Management authorities in various Northeastern states verified that there were no immediate reports of casualties or destruction of infrastructure due to the quake.
Quoting a Disaster Management officer in Agartala, IANS reported the earthquake originated at a depth of nearly 10 km, with its epicentre in Madhabdi in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. The shockwaves were experienced in Tripura, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya and West Bengal.
Bangladeshi media, citing information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), mentioned that the tremor was felt in Dhaka and several other regions of the country. Reports of vibration also came in from Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sitakunda, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Bogura, Barishal and Moulvibazar, according to a major daily.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Friday’s earthquake marked the fifth such incident in the Northeast this week and the 18th so far in November. Among these 18 tremors, seven occurred in Assam, five in Arunachal Pradesh, three in Manipur, and one each in Tripura, Meghalaya and Sikkim.
Several of these quakes were experienced at the same time across different Northeastern states. On November 2, 6, 11, 12 and 18, seismic activity was recorded in multiple states, especially Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
A review of NCS figures revealed that the Northeastern region has been hit by more than one earthquake every week this month, most of which registered between 3 and 4 on the Richter scale.
